CedintheCity children’s book series partnered with Inkwell Publishers Inc., a non-profit publishing house dedicated to supporting youth literacy and book ownership in underserved communities.
WHY IT MATTERS
38% of children in under-resourced communities do not have books at home, compared to 15% of children from other communities (Annie E. Casey Foundation).
Children who have their own books are six times more likely to read above the level expected for their age (National Literary Trust).
Studies show that children behind in their reading by the third grade too frequently end up in the juvenile justice system.
ABOUT THE BOOKS
CedintheCity joined InkWell’s Gift-A-Book campaign in the 2023-2024 school year and has seen significant success. The book series engages children with stories about the unique beauty found in different cultures and the importance of friendship.
Thanks to the support of individual donations and corporate sponsors, we provided over 500 students in Dekalb and Fulton counties with beautifully illustrated hardback books.
READING DAY
Our authors, illustrators, and corporate-sponsored volunteers read and engage with students for Reading Day. This interactive approach has a lasting impact on all involved and helps the school achieve its literacy goals.
OUR WORK HAS ONLY JUST BEGUN
Our collaboration with the Dekalb County School System aims to expand our reach to all elementary schools in their seven regions. Our goal is to replicate and enhance this model throughout all schools in every under-served county in Georgia.
